Mini-Split Versus Multi-Split: How Do These Systems Differ?

Ductless mini-split air conditioners and heat pumps offer many advantages over traditional ducted heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. They are quiet, energy-efficient and easy to install. An outdoor unit is connected to an indoor air handler by tubing inserted through a small hole in a wall. Tubing contains refrigerant, electrical conduits and condensate lines. Indoor cassettes can be positioned on the wall, ceiling or floor. No ductwork is required. Because there are no ducts, there is no leakage of conditioned air, which improves energy efficiency. In addition, airborne pollutants are not transferred between rooms as is the case with ducts.

Ductless Mini-Split Units

In mini-split units, one indoor cassette is connected to the condenser. To cool several rooms using mini-splits, multiple outdoor units must be installed. Each is connected to a single room, and temperatures can be set for each space. Unlike ducted systems, ductless ACs can be turned off and on as needed without affecting the indoor climate of other rooms.

Multi-Split Units

Multi-split units connect one outdoor condensing unit to up to eight indoor air handler cassettes. In simple multi-split configurations, a thermostat is installed in one room, and the temperature in each room is controlled by this thermostat. This configuration is convenient if the desired cooling load is the same for each room.

In zoned multi-split units, one condensing unit powers individual compressors that connect to each blower. Each zone has its own temperature controls, allowing occupants to adjust the temperature for each area. This configuration is ideal for large homes or offices where control of individual room temperatures is preferred.
