3 Common Ways to Alleviate Your Allergy Symptoms

Spring and summer not only bring warm weather to Clinton, TN but also bring allergy symptoms. Although spending time outdoors is enjoyable and relaxing, it can trigger coughing, nasal congestion, sinus pain, headaches, sneezing, itchy eyes, and sore throats. In addition to taking allergy relief medications, consider implementing these three ways of alleviating your allergy symptoms.

Use a Dehumidifier

High indoor humidity levels fuel the growth of mold. Many people are allergic to mold spores, and mold can release millions of spores every day. You could choose a portable dehumidifier for small rooms, such as a bedroom or bathroom. There are also whole-house dehumidifiers. These draw in air from your home’s return vents, cool and dehumidify it, drain away the water and rewarm the air. They can be used at the same time as your cooling system.

Rely on Air Conditioning

Instead of opening your windows for cool air or ventilation, rely on your central air conditioning system. Your air conditioning system’s filter will capture a lot of dust, pollen, mold spores and pet dander that could trigger your allergies. Keeping your windows shut also reduces the influx of pollen and mold spores into your home. Be sure to use your car’s air conditioning instead of opening the windows.

Turn to High-efficiency Filters

According to the Mayo Clinic, high-efficiency air filters help with controlling allergens in your home. Choose a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter for your vacuum. Consider an air purifier with a HEPA filter for your bedroom. There are also whole-house air purifiers that capture allergens and sanitize your home’s air. Choose a high-efficiency filter for your home’s air conditioner. These are measured under the minimum efficiency reported value (MERV) system. The higher the MERV rating, the more allergens the filter traps.
