3 Tips for Taking Care of Your Ductless Air Conditioner

Ductless mini-split air conditioners are easy to install, energy-efficient and quiet. They are available as either air conditioners or heat pumps. Heat pumps offer the advantage of providing both heating and cooling from the same unit. No matter which type of ductless air conditioner you have in your home or business, taking care of the system will prolong the service life, reduce the occurrence of repairs and keep energy bills low. Here are three maintenance tips that will help keep your unit running properly:

Clean the Filter

As with any air conditioner, keeping the filter clean is the first line of defense in maintaining energy efficiency and performance. Filters trap airborne particulates and prevent them from entering the mechanical portion of the unit. Air must flow freely over coils for proper heat exchange. If particulates settle on coils, the unit works harder to release heat. Eventually, the compressor may fail, indoor comfort will decline and energy bills can increase as much as 25 percent.

Clean Housing and Tubing

Check the housing of the exterior unit to make sure there are no obstructions. If leaves and debris coat coils, heat exchange is effected. Clean the indoor cabinet with a damp cloth to remove dust.

Tubing routed between the inside and outside cabinets contains refrigerant and electrical and condensate lines. If condensate tubing becomes blocked, moisture will collect inside the unit, which can damage it. Verify that water is flowing through the line.

Have Professional Seasonal Maintenance

Most manufacturers require seasonal maintenance to keep warranties valid. A professional HVAC contractor will examine, clean and calibrate each component of the unit, including housing, coils, fans, filters and refrigerant. Melton Heating and Air Conditioning offers annual maintenance contracts to keep your HVAC equipment in tip-top shape.
