7 Tips to Prepare Your Home for an HVAC Installation

An HVAC installation follows certain best practices to ensure the safety of your home in Oak Ridge, TN, and the longevity of your new system. The installation process is systematic and requires proper preparation to minimize risks and ensure a successful outcome. Here are seven tips to prepare your home for an HVAC installation:

Be Available

Schedule an HVAC installation during a time when you’ll be home. As the homeowner, your availability is essential throughout the installation process. The HVAC contractor will need access to all areas of your home and entry to the attic and crawl space. If you have pets, make arrangements for them to be out of the way during the HVAC installation.

Clear the Installation Area

Clear any obstacles where you’ll install the outdoor unit, including removing any shrubs, bushes or trees that may be in the way. It’s also vital to clear away any debris, such as leaves or branches, that could block airflow to the unit.

If you have a deck or patio, please remove any furniture or other items that might be in the way. Clearing the installation area will make the process go more smoothly and help reduce the risk of damage to your property.

Prepare for Indoor Installation

For the indoor installation, remove any furniture or other items from the area you are to install the HVAC unit. Clear off the ground around the furnace and any shelves or other storage areas that might be in the way. If you have a crawl space, ensure clear access for the contractor to enter and exit.

Turn Off Gas and Electricity

If your home has natural gas, the HVAC contractor must shut off the gas before starting the installation. The same is accurate for electricity; turn off all power to the area where you’ll install the unit. Once the installation is complete, the contractor will turn the gas and electricity back on.

Turning off gas and electricity is a safety precaution to prevent accidents during the installation. The system contains high- and low-voltage components, so it’s necessary to take this step to avoid any injuries.

Inspect Ductwork

If your home has ductwork, the contractor must inspect it before installing it. Examining it ensures that the system is compatible with your existing ductwork and that there are no leaks. The contractor may also need to make some modifications if you’re installing a new ductless AC unit.

Check if your ductwork needs replacement or repair before installation starts. Looking will avoid any issues during installation and ensure that your new HVAC system works properly.

Review the HVAC Installation Plans

Before the installation begins, review the plans with the contractor. The plan will show the location of the outdoor and indoor units and the ductwork (if applicable). Square out everything so that the contractor knows where to install the units.

Reviewing the plan is your chance to verify everything is correct. If you have any concerns or questions about the HVAC installation process, raise them with the contractor before work begins.

Plan for Any Unforeseen Circumstances

Any installation project comes with the potential for unforeseen circumstances. Prepare yourself for this by having a backup plan in place. If you’re doing an improvement project, be ready to replace worn-out or outdated materials and parts.

If you’re expecting extreme weather, have a contingency plan to keep your family comfortable. By preparing for the unexpected, you can avoid any stressful surprises during the installation process.
